The first is one everyone knows about which is \u2018absorption\u2019. Of course this is what you use a sponge or paper towel for. Wikipedia describes absorption as: &#8220;the incorporation of a substance in one state into another of a different state&#8221;\u00a0(e.g.,\u00a0liquids being absorbed by a\u00a0solid or gases\u00a0being absorbed by a liquid).<\/p>\n<p>The other type of sorption is \u2018adsorption\u2019, described as the physical adherence or bonding of\u00a0ions\u00a0and\u00a0molecules\u00a0onto the surface of another phase (e.g., reagents adsorbed to a solid\u00a0catalyst surface).
