São Paulo, Brazil – October 22, 2026 – MetaFLO Technologies participated in the 1st Business Breakfast hosted by the Comitê Brasileiro de Túneis (CBT – Brazilian Tunnelling Committee), sharing real-world applications of engineered solidification solutions for tunnelling and infrastructure projects.

Representing MetaFLO, Laurent Serra, Chief Scientist, delivered a technical presentation on the challenges of managing excavated materials containing free water, with a particular focus on Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPB TBM) operations, as well as other applications, including Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and hydrovac excavation.

The presentation explored how engineered solidification technologies can improve material handling, transportation, and disposal, drawing on real-world projects to demonstrate practical approaches to free-water control, slurry solidification, and more efficient Mauvaise gestion.

Improving EPB TBM Muck Management Through Solidification

In EPB TBM tunnelling operations, excavated muck can present significant handling and transportation challenges due to high moisture content, variable geological conditions, and the presence of free water.

During the presentation, Serra highlighted how engineered waste solidification agents can help transform wet, difficult-to-handle excavated materials into more stable and manageable solids.

Drawing on international tunnelling projects, MetaFLO demonstrated how project-specific solidification strategies can reduce reliance on conventional bulking materials, improve material consistency, and optimize transportation logistics.

These applications illustrate how effective free-water control and Mauvaise gestion can contribute to operational continuity, reduced truck movements, lower transportation costs, and improved environmental performance.

HDD Drilling Fluid Management and Slurry Solidification

The presentation also addressed the challenges associated with fluides de forage HDD, particularly bentonite-based slurries generated during horizontal directional drilling operations.

Through real-world HDD applications, MetaFLO demonstrated how solidification des déchets liquides technologies can simplify drilling fluid management by converting liquid and semi-liquid drilling waste into more manageable solids.

Using engineered solidification reagents, contractors can reduce the need for imported dry soil, minimize material volume increases, and shorten the time required to prepare drilling waste for transportation and disposal.

These examples highlighted the importance of selecting the appropriate solidification approach based on slurry composition, moisture content, available equipment, and project-specific disposal requirements.

Engineering Solidification Solutions for Real-World Conditions

A central message of the presentation was that no two tunnelling or drilling projects are the same.

Geological conditions, excavation methods, moisture variability, and operational requirements influence the selection and application of solidification agents.

With more than 22 years of experience developing chemical technologies for industrial applications, MetaFLO combines technical expertise and engineered formulations to address complex material management challenges.

By integrating solidification technologies into excavation and drilling operations, contractors can improve handling efficiency, optimize logistics, and support more sustainable infrastructure development.

MetaFLO thanks the Comitê Brasileiro de Túneis (CBT) for the invitation and the opportunity to share technical knowledge and practical experience with professionals advancing the tunnelling industry in Brazil.
